Tampa Bay Lightning give employees extra paid vacation time

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

Lightning owner Jeff Vinik won't let the NHL lockout affect his generosity, as he informed each of the team's 150-or-so employees that they'll receive extended paid vacation during the holiday season.

Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik informed each club employee on Friday that they will receive extra paid vacation time, according to Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune.

Vinik made the decision to reward the Lightning's employees for their hard work despite the fact that the team is losing revenue due to the ongoing NHL lockout. In addition to receiving two weeks of paid vacation, each team employee will also be given a $75 bonus, which is designed to be used to help out the less fortunate. Vinik wrote to his staff:

"We are asking that you use that money to purchase gifts for a holiday charity or perhaps a needy family close to your heart. Let's count our collective blessings while helping someone in need.''

The one caveat to the reward is that, if the NHL lockout ends during the holiday break, the extended vacation will be cut short, and the approximately 150 people that the team employs will be required to return to work.

During the break, the Lightning's ticket office and team store, both of which are located at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, will be open during regular business hours.
