In a game between the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night, Washington defenseman Mike Green delivered a brutal hit to Brett Connolly against the boards behind the Capitals' net. The hit was deemed illegal and the NHL has announced that Green will be suspended for three games as a result.
NHL.com posted a video on Friday in which NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan breaks down the hit in exacting detail, explaining why the hit was illegal and why this particular incident necessitated a suspension for Green.
If you watch the video, you can see that it is a plainly unwarranted hit that did not need to happen. It seems as though the suspension is very much justified and it also shows that the NHL seems intent on lessening hits of this type and their resulting player injuries.
