Daniel Alfredsson Injury Update: Senators Captain To Return For Game 6

Daniel Alfredsson will be on the ice at Scotiabank Place in Kanata, Ont. on Monday night as the Ottawa Senators look to dispatch the top-seeded New York Rangers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Alfredsson made the announcement to the media gathered at the morning skate just outside the Nation's Capital before Game 6.

Alfredsson has been out of the lineup since Game 2 against the Rangers, when he suffered a concussion after taking an elbow to the head from New York forward Carl Hagelin. Hagelin was suspended three games for the hit and missed Games 3, 4 and 5. He'll also return to the lineup in Game 6.

Alfredsson, the captain of the Senators, is obviously a key part of their equation. Hagelin is a vital contributing factor for the Rangers as well, so in an elimination game, it's good to see both players can put the incident behind them and find their way back into the lineup.

Carl Hagelin Suspension: Rangers 'Thoroughly Perplexed' By NHL Decision

The New York Rangers are not happy with the NHL's decision to suspend Carl Hagelin. The forward will sit for Games 3, 4 and 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals after his Game 2 elbow to the head of Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. Alfredsson left that game and did not return, and his status is unknown for the remainder of the series.

The organization released comment to the media following the announced decision on Sunday evening.

The New York Rangers accept the NHL's three-game suspension of Carl Hagelin and will not pursue an appeal.

However, we are thoroughly perplexed in the ruling's inconsistency with other supplementary discipline decisions that have been made throughout this season and during the playoffs.

We will have no further comment on this decision.

Carl Hagelin Suspended 3 Games For Elbow On Daniel Alfredsson

Carl Hagelin will miss Games 3, 4 and 5 of the New York Rangers series against the Ottawa Senators after his brutal elbow to the head of Daniel Alfredsson during Game 2. Brendan Shanahan of the NHL's Department of Player Safety made the decision on Sunday, and he announced it via a video on the league's website.

"It is important to note that Alfredsson suffered an injury on this play," Shanahan said. That's been the standard to which they've decided suspensions in these playoffs, and it's likely why Hagelin will miss time. Alfredsson's status is unknown for Game 3 at Scotiabank Place on Monday.

Hagelin's a vital player for the Rangers, and his absence from the lineup wil no doubt hurt their chances now that the series moves to Ottawa tied at a game apiece. Of course, you won't hear much remorse from Senators fans, who lost their captain as a result of this hit. New York could opt to put rookie Chris Kreider in the lineup for his NHL debut to replace Hagelin.
