Capitals Vs. Bruins, NHL Playoffs 2012 Game 4: Boston Controls First Period, But Score Tied 1-1

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Washington Capitals were lucky to get out of the first period with a tie score, and that's after scoring the first goal in Game 4 of their series with the Boston Bruins. Marcus Johansson scored just 1:22 into the game on a rush with Brooks Laich, but following the goal, Boston completely took over the flow of the game.

By the end of the first period, the Bruins had compiled a 14-3 lead in shots on goal, but Braden Holtby stood tall, only allowing a goal off a 2-on-1 rush at the 13:12 mark. It was a pretty weak goal as Rich Peverley entered the zone and opted to feather a shot past Holtby.

The Capitals' three-shot total was actually inflated by a late-period power play, so there's no doubt that they're going to need to control possession a whole lot more if they want to have a chance to take the lead in the game and ultimately the series in periods two and three.
