This was it for the Caps: Open net, overtime, puck bouncing right on to Dennis Seidenberg's Patrice Bergeron's stick. Braden Holtby never stood a chance, and Karl Alzner couldn't get in front of the puck in time to make the block.
But Alzner got close, laying out in an effort to block the side of the net, if not at least distract Bergeron. And somehow the shot went wide.
Moments later, Joel Ward buried the game-winner and the Caps were through to the second round with a 2-1 overtime win. Such is life.
Upon closer look, Alzner didn't seem to actually get a piece of the puck.
Instead, it appears to have taken an awkward bounce off the ice, skidding wide of the net. Tough shot, but one that will haunt the Bruins.
