Marc Bergevin To Be Named Montreal Canadiens General Manager, Says Report

The Montreal Canadiens fired general manager Pierre Gauthier at the end of the season in a move that wasn't all that surprising considering SB Nation's own Dominik Jansky referred to him as "arguably the worst general manager" in team history when discussing possible replacements. His replacement, then, shouldn't have a lot to live up to in terms of getting the team back on track -- but he won't be stepping into the easiest job, either.

The man taking on that task is Marc Bergevin, the former assistant general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

The Montreal Canadiens have selected Marc Bergevin as their new general manager, according to a source. Bergevin served as assistant GM for the Blackhawks under Stan Bowman during the 2011-12 season. The 46-year-old Montreal native will replace the fired Pierre Gauthier.

It's the second consecutive season the Hawks have seen their assistant GM land a top job elsewhere as the Winnipeg Jets hired Kevin Cheveldayoff as their GM following the '10-11 season.

It'll be interesting to see how Bergevin fits in considering Jansky didn't seem optimistic about his chances to get the job when running down possible candidates:

Pros: He speaks French, too. Remembered more as a prankster during his NHL playing career as a depth defenseman, he's actually been accumulating experience as assistant GM for the Chicago Blackhawks. His personality would no doubt play well with fans and media.

Cons: Like everyone who's never been an NHL GM before, no one knows if he'll be any good. Also: Never played for the Habs.

Tea Leaves: Not happening.

He has an entire offseason to prove himself and, on the bright side, he likely isn't exactly entering his new job with great expectations from the fan base.
