With Backs Against Wall, New York Rangers Hope To Build On Strong Game 5 Performance

Stay connected with SB Nation

It's a scary reality for the New York Rangers: Their phenomenal season could be over on Friday night with a loss to the New Jersey Devils in Game 6. But if there's anything comforting the Rangers and their fans heading into this do-or-die game against a bitter rival, it's the type of attitude they showed in Wednesday night's heartbreaking Game 5 defeat.

The Rangers were the better team for the majority of that game, erasing an early New Jersey lead before ultimately allowing a game-winning goal that went completely against the momentum they had built. The loss was obviously a frustrating outcome, but the way they played the game is a sign of optimism for Rangers fans at Blueshirt Banter.

The team looked like they got their legs back under them Wednesday night. And aside from two goals Henrik Lundqvist stops 99% of the time, this series might be 3-2 in the other direction.

I was impressed with the New York Rangers fight in Game 5. It's remarkably hard for a team to come back from down 3-0 in the first ten minutes of a critical playoff game. That didn't stop the Rangers, and thanks to efforts from the usual suspects -- Ryan Callahan, Chris Kreider, Marian Gaborik, Ryan McDonagh -- the Rangers closed the gap.
