Remember those old "choose your own adventure" books? Those have made a bit of a comeback in the digital age, and the NHL is using it as a strategy on Stanley Cup Finals Media Day.
For those unfamiliar, Media Day (which takes place on Tuesday this year, at the home arena of the Eastern Conference champion) is the day before the Stanley Cup Finals, which makes all of the players and coaches available for individual press conferences and interviews. There's a lot of each throughout the day.
NHL Network has covered Media Day the last few years, but now NHL.com has decided to take it to a more extreme measure. NHL.com will allow viewers to select press conferences from one of three podiums, allowing viewers to see the players they're most interested in talking. More on the Media Day show from Chris Botta of Sports Business Daily ($):
The net will have a three-hour live show during Media Day, and as a bonus, fans can go to NHL.com and choose among three podiums to watch players at their press conferences. "It’s a unique opportunity to bring it to viewers live," said NHL Network Exec Producer Mark Preisler. "We’ll take fans inside the Media Day with complete coverage, plus they’ll have fun on NHL.com by jumping from podium to podium."
The story also reveals that NHL Network will air three-hour pre-game shows for every game of the Stanley Cup Finals, featuring analysis from Barry Melrose, who will be making his return to Los Angeles. Mullets in the Hollywood sun? The Stanley Cup must be near.
