Kings Vs. Blues: Sweep Teaches St. Louis Tough Lessons

What should have been a closer series was instead a sweep thanks to the Blues' poor discipline and failure to find ways through the Kings' stifling defense.

Kings Vs. Blues, NHL Playoffs 2012 Game 4: Los Angeles Completes Sweep, Wins 3-1

After getting bounced from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round the past two seasons, the Los Angeles Kings are the first team in the Western Conference Finals in 2012. The Kings entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed, and after knocking off the top-seeded Vancouver Canucks, they became the first bottom seed to knock of the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in consecutive series in NHL history. They will face the winner of the Coyotes-Predators series in their first Conference Finals since 1993.

The Kings closed it out with a 3-1 win over the Blues in Game 4, getting one goal each in the first period from Jordan Nolan, his first in the series, and the eventual game-winner from Dustin Brown, his fifth. Goalie Jonathan Quick, arguably the hottest goalie in the playoffs so far, saved 23 of 24 shots and 96 of 102 in the series, a phenomenal number. The Blues actually beat him a couple of times and had chances to tie the game in the third period, but couldn't quite get the puck in the net. This was the closest they got:

Less than a minute left in the game and the Blues pulled their goalie, trying to find some way of extending the season. With 25 seconds left, Brown scored his second of the game and sixth of the series on a breakaway, clinching the win.

The Blues made it a close one — as Quick said afterward, it was far closer than a four-game sweep — but timely scoring and brilliant goaltending was the recipe for the Kings to continue one of the most unlikely postseason runs in recent history.

GIF: Jonathan Quick's Shoulder Gets Skated On

Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick almost let a game-tying goal get by him in the third period of Game 4 against the St. Louis Blues, and what did he get for his troubles? A skate right on the shoulder during a scrum in front of the goal. This one looks like it hurts.

Kings Vs. Blues, NHL Playoffs 2012 Game 4: L.A. Holds 2-1 Lead After 2nd Period, Looking For Sweep

The Los Angeles Kings are hoping for a quick sweep of the St. Louis Blues at home Sunday afternoon, and after two periods, they hold a 2-1 lead and appear to be on their way to accomplishing that feat. The Kings got almost no offense going in the second period — they had just three shots on goal — but it didn't matter. The star of this series all along has been goaltender Jonathan Quick and, other than a first-period Kevin Shattenkirk goal, that story has held true in Game 4.

Both teams had two penalties in the second period, but there were no full power plays, as a few seconds after Blues center David Backes drew an elbowing penalty, Kings defenseman Drew Doughty found himself in the box for interference. Just two minutes later, the Kings' bench was penalized for too many men on the ice, and just over a minute later, Blues center Scott Nichol was booked for high-sticking. Neither team could capitalize on their advantages.

Entering the third period, the Blues will need to find a way to get by Quick, because he's been sensational. He's got 16 saves, but many of them have come while he was being shielded and he managed to deflect on-target shots anyway. If the Blues can't break through, their season will come to an end Sunday at Staples Center.
