Rangers Vs. Capitals, NHL Playoffs 2012 Game 5: Rangers Lead 1-0 After First Period

The New York Rangers struck first in Game 5 of their series with the Washington Capitals, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Anton Stralman scored the lone goal of the first period for the Rangers, with defenseman Marc Staal and center Derek Stepan assisting. New York tested Washington goalie Braden Holtby frequently with 17 shots on goal in the first period. Marian Gaborik led the way with three shots on goal. Meanwhile, Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist faced just four shots on goal from the Capitals.

There were two penalties in the first half, but neither team was able to capitalize on their power-play opportunity. The teams are tied 2-2 in their best-of-seven series.
