Justin Schultz Agrees To Terms With Edmonton Oilers

Prized rookie free agent Justin Schultz has agreed to terms with the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced Saturday. The former Wisconsin Badger was a second-round selection by the Anaheim Ducks during the 2008 NHL Draft. However, Schultz made it clear that he did not want to join the Ducks after declaring he would leave for the NHL after his junior year, creating league-wide drama.

The Ducks had a 30-day window during which they could negotiate exclusively with the defenseman. They made overtures, except Schultz wanted to look elsewhere. The Oilers were ultimately the winner in the sweepstakes. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota Wild and the Detroit Red Wings were reportedly among the suitors.

Schultz brings some offensive punch along with his skills on defense. He notched 44 points in 37 games with the Badgers during the 2011-12 season. Schultz will be able to officially sign a contract once the NHL free agency period officially begins July 1.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. General manager Steve Tambellini will address the media Saturday to discuss the signing.
