Sidney Crosby is looking for a new contract lasting at least seven years with the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to reports. Crosby's current contract expires after the 2012-13 season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to negotiate a new contract with star center Sidney Crosby once free agency begins on July 1. Crosby is entering the final year of his current contract, and is reportedly looking for a deal lasting at least seven years, and possibly 10 or more.
Considering Crosby's concussion history, such a lengthy deal is obviously risky. Then again, as the face of the franchise Crosby understandably believes he is worth it, and the organization may agree. Under general manager Ray Shero, the longest contract ever signed was Marc-Andre Fleury's seven-year deal in 2006.
Complicating matters will be the expiration of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement in September. If a deal does not get done beforehand, the potential fight to hammer out a new CBA could stall negotiations even longer.
