Steve Tambellini, Edmonton Oilers Agree To New Contract

Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini has agreed to terms on a new contract with the team, the president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe announced Wednesday. Tambellini has spent the last four seasons in Edmonton trying to revive the struggling franchise.

"Three years ago we asked Steve to begin a rebuild which we all know hasn't been easy," Lowe said in a statement. "However, Oilers fans can take some consolation in the fact that Steve and his staff have acquired some amazing talent which will most definitely be the cornerstone to future sustained success for the Edmonton Oilers."

The Oilers went just 32-40-10 this past season, and have finished in last place in the Northeast Division of the Western Conference for three years in a row. However, Tambellini has a proven track record of success on the national team level: He helped put together rosters for the gold-medal winning Team Canada squads during the 2002 Winter Olympics and 2004 World Cup of Hockey as a member of the management team.
