Taylor Hall Contract: Smart Signing By The Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers announced on Twitter Wednesday morning that 20-year-old forward Taylor Hall has agreed to a seven year, $42 million contract extension with the team.

Hall, the No. 1-overall pick in 2010, scored 27 goals with 26 assists in 61 games played last season for Edmonton. It's a signing that makes a lot of sense, according to Ryan Batty of The Copper & Blue:

"Hall drives the play when he's on the ice. It's an over used statment, but he's the straw that stirs the drink and he's only played two seasons in the league."

Batty continues, noting that while injuries are always a concern with lengthy deals such as this, the Oilers locked up a player in his prime for the foreseeable future at a reasonable price, compared to similar deals that other high draft picks have inked.

Under the extension, Hall will be an Oiler through the 2019-20 season.
