Perhaps more notably, he won the fastest skater portion of the Skills Challenge at the NHL All-Star Game, recording the best final-round time in the history of the event. He also made headlines by serving a three-game suspension during the playoffs, after elbowing Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson in the head during Game 2 of the Rangers' first-round series loss.
Prior to his NHL debut, Hagelin played for the AHL's Connecticut Whale after spending four years at the University of Michigan. Hagelin was drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
