The NHL Players Association tabled a counter-proposal to the NHL's most recent collective bargaining proposal on Wednesday afternoon.
NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr stated that the union's counter-proposal directly responded to the NHL's proposal, which was tabled late on Tuesday night. The NHL is now reviewing the proposal and there is a chance that the two sides will meet again later on Wednesday, potentially around 8 p.m. ET.
While little information has leaked from the most recent meetings, it has been reported that the NHLPA was unsatisfied with the NHL's proposal on player pensions. It is believed that the two sides engaged in small group negotiations about the issue during Wednesday morning.
However, the pension is a complex issue, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.
In addition to the negotiations, the NHLPA needs to determine if they will file a disclaimer of interest prior to Wednesday's midnight deadline. A disclaimer of interest would see the NHLPA walk away from the players, effectively dissolving the union.
Fehr would not comment when asked about the NHLPA's course of action with the disclaimer.
If they do not file the disclaimer by midnight, the players can hold another vote at a later date to do so.
