Jason Spezza injury: Senators forward to undergo back surgery, according to report

Jason Spezza has reportedly decided to undergo back surgery. It is unclear how much time he will miss.

Ottawa Senators forward Jason Spezza has elected to undergo surgery to repair an issue with his back, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun on Thursday morning.

Garrioch was confident in confirming that the decision has been made, but is unaware how much time Spezza will miss.

On Wednesday night, Garrioch questioned the severity of Spezza's injury as the forward had missed three consecutive days of practice and two games. Head coach Paul MacLean stated that Spezza was still being evaluated but admitted he potentially could miss a significant period of time.

Garrioch learned that Spezza had traveled to Toronto to have the affected area examined Tuesday night.

It is believed that the injury flared up during the team's 2-1 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday afternoon. If Garrioch's report is accurate, this will be the second back surgery Spezza has undergone over the course of his career.

In 2006, he played the final three months of the season with a herniated disc, which required surgery in May of that year.
