Alexander Edler, Patrick Kaleta have hearing with NHL Department of Player Safety

USA TODAY Sports

The NHL announced that Alexander Edler and Patrick Kaleta will have discipline hearings for illegal checks to the head.

The NHL Department of Player Safety has announced that two discipline hearings have been scheduled in relation to incidents that occurred during Thursday night's games.

Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta has been given the option of an in-person hearing for an illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson. The hit occurred at the 3:10 mark of the first period and Kaleta was not given a penalty for the play, but did engage in a fight with Columbus forward Jared Boll and drew a five-minute major for fighting. The league's decision to offer an in-person hearing means that Kaleta can be suspended in excess of five games.

You can see the hit and the fight in this video clip:

Kaleta has been suspended two times since 2011, qualifying him as a repeat offender. He was forced to sit out four games for head-butting Philadelphia Flyers forward Jake Voracek in 2011 and was suspended five games in March of 2013 for boarding New York Rangers forward Brad Richards.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler will also have a hearing for an illegal check to the head of San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl. Edler's hearing will take place via telephone, however. Here's a GIF of the Edler hit, via The Score and Fear The Fin:

Edler was not called for a penalty on the play and Hertl did not miss any time due to the incident. The hearing will take place at noon on Friday, according to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet .Edler was suspended two games in March of 2013 for charging Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith.
