Calgary Flames rookie Sean Monahan will remain with the club for the remainder of the 2013-14 season, the team announced on Wednesday. The Flames still had the option of returning Monahan to the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League without the first year of his entry-level contract beginning.
If Monahan dresses for Thursday night's game against the Dallas Stars, that will no longer be an option. Junior eligible players have the ability to play in nine games without their entry-level contract beginning and Thursday will mark Monahan's 10th game with the Flames.
Manager Jay Feaster stated that the organization is comfortable with Monahan formally beginning his NHL career:
The organization's confidence level is likely tied to Monahan's team-leading six goals and nine points, which is the third-highest total among rookies entering competition on Wednesday night.
Originally selected with the No. 6 overall pick in June's draft, Monahan was the first of three first-round selections by the Flames.
