John Scott gets match penalty for head shot on Loui Eriksson

USA TODAY Sports

Buffalo Sabres forward John Scott has an in-person hearing with the league for this head shot o Loui Eriksson on Wednesday night.

With the Buffalo Sabres trailing 4-2 early in the third period, coach Ron Rolston decided it would be a good idea to put his designated fighter, John Scott, on the ice. Why? Nobody knows, but only bad things could come from such a decision.

Bad things happened as Scott delivered this brutal head shot to Loui Eriksson.

Here's another look:

Scott received a five-minute major and a match penalty for the hit, and you can pretty much guarantee that some additional supplemental discipline is coming from the league. Probably a lot of it. Clear hit to the head, head appears to be the target, and there was an injury. All of the ingredients are there for a lengthy suspension.

TSN's Bob McKenzie has already reported that Scott will have an in-person hearing with the league at a date and time that has yet to be determined. An in-person hearing gives the NHL the ability to hand out a suspension that is six games or longer.

Eriksson did not return to the game after the hit. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli issued the following statement after the game:

"Loui is staying overnight in Buffalo for precautionary reasons. He is expected to return to Boston on Thursday."

In 186 career games Scott has one goal and four assists while recording 309 penalty minutes. He appeared in six games this season entering Wednesday's game and averaged less than five minutes of ice-time per game, recording just one shot on goal.

The Sabres are already without Patrick Kaleta due to the suspension he received for his hit on Columbus' Jack Johnson.
