Ville Leino injury: Sabres F out indefinitely with cracked rib

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Spor

The saga of Ville Leino continues with another injury.

Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino is out indefinitely with a cracked rib, head coach Ron Rolston announced on Thursday afternoon.

Leino sustained the injury during the first period of Wednesday night's game against the Detroit Red Wings and managed to play through the entirety of the contest, recording 12:38 of ice time. Buffalo will not recall anyone from the American Hockey League, instead opting to move Tyler Ennis to wing and Johan Larsson to center.

A major free agent signing in the summer of 2011, Leino agreed to a six-year, $27 million contract that has been a burden on the Sabres ever since. Having registered only 25 points in his first season, Leino missed all but eight games in 2013 due to injury, which then made it impossible for the team to extend him a compliance buyout this past offseason.

Having undergone hip surgery last season, Leino looked forward to an attempted rebound in 2013-14 before sustaining this latest ailment in the campaign's opening game. Hopefully, Leino will have a chance to accomplish his goal sooner than later.
