The Washington Capitals will be without captain Alex Ovechkin when they travel to Philadelphia to challenge the Flyers on Friday night. Ovechkin sustained an unidentified upper-body injury, which kept him on of practice on Wednesday. He will be unavailable for the contest and it remains unclear how long he will be out of action.
This marks the first game Ovechkin has missed due to injury since Feb. 22, 2012.
Alex Ovechkin has missed 21 career games due to injury/suspension/etc. The #Caps are 11-8-2 in those games.— Adam Vingan (@AdamVingan) October 31, 2013
With Ovechkin out of the lineup, Washington ran the following line combinations during practice on Thursday:
Your Ovechkinless forward lines this morning (and likely the lineup tomorrow): 10-19-16, 21-90-20, 25-84-42, 24-46/83-43. #Caps— Adam Vingan (@AdamVingan) October 31, 2013
This might be a golden opportunity for the struggling Flyers, as the team has been anemic in producing offense. However, their defense has fared well with goaltender Steve Mason performing exceptionally well. Of course, a minus-10 goal differential has made wins difficult to come by.
Won't hurt that Washington's top scorer will be out of commission.
