Howard left practice early on Wednesday morning after tweaking his knee, and the Red Wings called up goaltender Peter Mrazek from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL within a few hours. It wasn't until Friday afternoon that the Red Wings announced the extent of his injury. Howard is struggling this season with a 6-8-7 record, a 2.65 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.
Jonas Gustavsson will get the majority of the starts for Detroit while Howard is out. Gustavsson has played terrifically this season, going 8-1-2 with a 1.93 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.
This is yet another setback in what has been an injury-plagued season for the Red Wings. Pavel Datsyuk just returned from a seven-game absence with a concussion while captain Henrik Zetterberg is on long-term injured reserve with a herniated disc.
