The Pittsburgh Penguins solidified their goaltending situation on Saturday, locking up backup Jeff Zatkoff to a two-year contract worth $600,000 per year.
The 26-year-old netminder was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the third round of the 2006 NHL Entry Drafth. After spending a few seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate in Manchester, Zatkoff signed a two-year deal with the Penguins in 2012. His contract was set to expire after this season.
Zatkoff has performed admirably behind starter Marc-Andre Fleury this season, posting a 6-2 record with a 2.46 goals against average and a .912 save percentage in eight appearances. He got his first look with the Penguins last season when Tomas Vokoun went down with an injury, and Zatkoff has owned the backup job ever since. Vokoun missed most of last season, and hasn't played this year due to a blot clot in his pelvis.
