Winter Classic 2014: Jonathan Bernier will start in goal for Maple Leafs

Jonathan Bernier will be the Toronto Maple Leafs starter in goal for the 2014 Winter Classic.

Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle hasn't yet announced it, but Jonathan Bernier confirmed to the media on Tuesday that he will be the starting goaltender for Toronto in the 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

"I found out before practice so obviously it's great," Bernier said on Tuesday, via Dan Rosen of It's great that he gave me the nod and being part of this whole history, it's pretty amazing."

It probably shouldn't be a huge shock given the way the playing time has been distributed lately as Bernier seems to be taking the No. 1 job, at least in the eyes of the coaching staff. With his start on Wednesday Bernier will have started 11 of Toronto's past 18 games. Out of the seven games he didn't start over that stretch, he twice relieved James Reimer during the game.

The Maple Leafs acquired Bernier this past offseason from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for goaltender Ben Scrivens and forward Matt Frattin.

In 28 appearances this season Bernier has a .930 save percentage to go with a 12-11-4 record.
