Blues vs. Red Wings preview: Central Division rivals meet on national stage

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Red Wings (7-4-1) will host the St. Louis Blues (6-5-1) at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday night.

It will mark the fourth of five meetings between the two Central Division rivals this season. It will also be the third meeting between the two clubs over the course of the last two weeks.

While the Red Wings dropped the first game by a disappointing score of 6-0 on opening night, the team has found their offensive touch against the Blues by producing five goals in each of the last two meetings.

Compiling a 5-3 victory on the first day of February, Detroit following up the performance six days later with a 5-1 victory at Scottrade Center.

After an inconsistent start to the 2013 season, the Red Wings have found their stride in February winning four of six games in the month. The team will enter Wednesday night on a three-game winning streak.

The Blues opened the year as one of the Western Conference's top teams.

Winning six of their first seven games, the reigning Central Division champs looked poised to retain their crown. However, the club drastically fell off once the calendar flipped over to February and have failed to record a victory in the season's second month.

Entering Wednesday night, the Blues have gone five consecutive games without registering a win (0-4-1) and have been outscored over that span by a margin of 26-11 (allowing four or more goals against in each of the five contests).

Wednesday night's game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., ET and will be nationally broadcast on NBCSN, as well as TSN2.
