The Islanders completely changed the momentum before intermission.
It was all going relatively well until the end of the second period for the Devils. Johan Hedberg had made two spectacular stops (one off a penalty shot) and kept New York off the board while New Jersey piled up the shots against Evgeni Nabokov.
But then it all fell apart in the span of four minutes. John Tavares tapped home a cross-ice pass from Brad Boyes on a rush at 16:46 to get the Islanders' first tally. A minute later, Bryce Salvador took a reckless high-sticking penalty on Matt Martin to put the the Devils on the kill. Tavares scored again on the man advantage just another minute later.
Sixty seconds later (sensing a trend here?) Matt Moulson scored on another power play and suddenly the Islanders had gained a 3-0 lead and the momentum was solidly on their side going into the second intermission. The Islanders ended up riding that energy to a 5-1 win.
