The Colorado netminder just faced 56 shots in a single game from the Edmonton Oilers. The previous franchise record for Edmonton was 56 shots, and they blew past in dramatic fashion on Saturday night.
First, some context. The Oilers were down 4-1 as the second period was winding down and facing yet another loss without any sign of life on offense. Then Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his first of the year, and everything changed. Already peppering Varlamov with shots, the Oilers pushed even harder. Ales Hemsky scored. Then Jordan Eberle tied the game up in the middle of the third period.
Suddenly, with minutes left in the game, Edmonton were within striking distance of their franchise record for shots in a game. The 55th shot was Magnus Pjaarvi's game-winning goal, and the record-breaking 56th was Jordan Eberle's empty-netter to seal the win.
It was a storybook ending to one heck of a comeback for the Oilers.
