Jannik Hansen gets one-game suspension for Hossa incident

After Jannik Hansen's brutal elbow to the head of Marian Hossa yesterday, you had to know that the NHL would make a swift decision on his punishment.

They did, and it's about what everyone expected:

NHL head disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan explained his ruling in the video below:

To summarize:

• Shanahan admits that both players were reaching for the puck, but at a certain point Jannik Hansen gave up this pursuit and changed his intentions.
• Shanahan makes a distinction between the two fists of the players. Hossa's hand remained open and ready to catch the puck, while Hansen's hand closed into a fist as he struck Hossa.

While all of this may occur in a split second, we feel that the carelessness and the force with which the blow was delivered elevate this incident to the level of supplemental discipline.
