Beanpot 2013: Terriers, Huskies knotted at one

Stay connected with SB Nation

BOSTON -- Searching for their first Beanpot title in a quarter-century, the Northeastern Huskies played a strong first period at the TD Garden, scoring an early goal and ending the stanza in a 1-1 tie with the No. 11/13 Boston University Terriers in the opening game of the 61st Beanpot Tournament.

Despite finishing tied, BU held a slim 12-10 shots on goal advantage in the stanza.

The Huskies were the first dogs on the board at 2:09 of the opening stanza as freshman Kevin Roy had the last whack at a loose puck in front of Terrier rookie Matt O'Connor. Senior captain Vinny Saponari, a former Terrier in his own right, got credit for the primary assist and careening the puck off O'Connor off to Roy for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.

However, the lead did not last long as the Terriers set up for a beautiful tic-tac-toe sequence in the offensive zone, cashing in past NU's Chris Rawlings at the 5:53 mark. Freshman Danny O'Regan, a Needham, Mass. native and St. Sebastian's School product, took the strong feed from senior Wade Megan for his tenth strike of the campaign.
