Kimmo Timonen signs 1-year extension with Flyers

Al Bello

The Philadelphia Flyers officially signed defenseman Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract on Thursday.

The Philadelphia Flyers officially announced that they have come to terms on a one-year contract extension with defenseman Kimmo Timonen, according to an announcement by general manager Paul Holmgren on Thursday night.

The deal will pay Timonen $6 million, according to a Tim Panaccio of CSN Philadelphia.

Timonen is playing in the final year of a six-year contract worth $38 million, which carried an annual average value of $6.3 million against the salary cap. The 37-year-old defenseman is being paid a pro-rated $3 million dollar salary for 2013.

Holmgren stated that the team retained Timonen for his invaluable presence on the ice and in the locker room.

Timonen was originally acquired by the Flyers via trade with the Nashville Predators in June of 2007 in exchange for a first-round draft selection in the 2007 NHL Draft. Since joining the team, Timonen has been a staple of the team's defense corps.

Through 10 games this season, Timonen is third on the club in total points with five (one goal and four assists).
