The Stars forward violently retaliated in defense of his goalie.
The Stars' 5-1 loss to the Oilers on Thursday night was ugly in many ways, but Jamie Benn made sure it ended with a particular bit of nastiness.
Late in the third period, with the Stars' fate already decided, Ryan Jones collided with Stars netminder Kari Lehtonen. It looked pretty harmless and incidental at the time; Jones was trying to make a play and simply ran out of room. However, it left Lehtonen a bit shaken up.
So Jamie Benn decided to take matters into his own hands in defense of his goaltender. Benn skated behind Jones and violently cross-checked him in the back. Benn was rightly given a game misconduct for the act.
The Stars are struggling mightily right now, and they might have just lost their best player to a suspension. We'll see.
