Panthers vs. Hurricanes: Kevin Westgarth knocks out Eric Selleck before gloves hit ice

Bruce Bennett

Eric Selleck started a fight with Kevin Westgarth. In retrospect, that wasn't wise.

(Video from HockeyVideoHD)

The Carolina Hurricanes traded for Kevin Westgarth earlier this season in an effort to get tougher, and Westgarth provided an impressive display of his toughness in this fight against Eric Selleck of the Florida Panthers. Westgarth finished a solid shift by responding enthusiastically to Selleck's physical play, and in a few seconds it was all over. Westgarth's punches appeared to send Selleck reeling before the players' gloves had even settled on the ice.

Selleck has a history of fighting in the minor leagues, but this bout was his first in the NHL, coming in his first NHL game. He probably won't look back on this one very fondly.

Welcome to the NHL, Selleck. It's not going to get any easier.
