Coyotes vs. Ducks: Huge Phoenix penalty kill in overtime leads to shootout win

The 'Yotes had to kill off a rare penalty in overtime to send it to a shootout.

The Ducks and Coyotes started off a three-game series with a bang on Saturday night. Phoenix barely pulled off a 5-4 shootout win thanks to a massive penalty kill late in the overtime period.

After Antoine Vermette was called for holding on Andrew Cogliano, the Coyotes were tasked with one of the more difficult situations in hockey: killing off two minutes of a 4-on-3 Ducks power play in overtime. The Ducks didn't get many shots on net during the kill, a testament to the excellent positioning by the Phoenix special teams unit. After a couple of stops, Zbynek Michalek made a crucial interception that allowed the Coyotes to clear again with less than 20 seconds left. After one last Mike Smith glove save the game finally went to the shootout. Smith even had a few choice words for Bobby Ryan before he skated to the bench.

Smith then stopped every shot he faced to earn the win for Phoenix. Here's video of the shootout:
