Women's Frozen Four 2013: Boston University, Mercyhurst battle in semifinal

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Boston University and Mercyhurst will meet for a chance to advance to the national championship game.

The 2013 Women's Frozen Four semifinal will conclude when Boston University (27-5-3) challenges Mercyhurst (29-6-1) at Ridder Arena on Friday night.

The winner of the contest will face the winner of Minnesota vs. Boston College on Sunday afternoon for the national championship.

Friday's contest will mark the third Frozen Four appearance for Mercyhurst, who punched their ticket with a 4-3 overtime victory against Cornell last Saturday. The Lakers will enter the contest with the third-ranked offense in Division I (averaging 4.22 goals per game), as well as a formidable defense (allowing an average of 1.69 goals against per game). The team is also riding an eight-game winning streak.

Boston University will attempt to advance to their second-ever national championship game. Having defeated Clarkson 5-3 last Saturday, the Terriers will look to defeat Mercyhurst for the second time in NCAA tournament play. While both teams have recorded wins, Boston University won the most recent meeting 4-2 in the 2011 quarterfinal. They eventually advanced to the championship game.

Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET.
