Stephen Weiss injury: Panthers forward to miss remainder of season

Thearon W. Henderson

The Florida Panthers' injury woes continued on Tuesday morning when Dale Tallon announced Stephen Weiss would miss the remainder of the year due to wrist surgery.

Florida Panthers forward Stephen Weiss will miss the remainder of the season due to a lingering wrist issue and will require surgery, according to an announcement by general manager Dale Tallon on Tuesday morning.

Weiss has collected one goal and three assists for four points in 17 games played this season. Playing in the final year of a six-year, $18.6 million contract, Weiss was believed to be a valuable trade asset for the Panthers. With Florida currently sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference, the club was expected to be a seller at the trade deadline.

Now with Weiss out for the remainder of the year, the option of dangling the 29-year-old pending unrestricted free agent as a rental to playoff contenders is no longer a possibility.

This development is merely another addition to the Panthers' struggles with the injury bug this season. In addition to Weiss, Jose Theodore, Dmitry Kulikov, Scottie Upshall, Mike Weaver, Kris Versteeg and Ed Jovanovski are all dealing with injuries.
