Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

There's a long, storied history of hat tricks being scored on hat giveaway nights in the NHL.

On Monday night, Los Angeles Kings forward Jeff Carter completed one of the Greatest Feats In Sport™ -- scoring a hat trick on hat giveaway night. While this phenomenon is a rare occurrence, it has happened before. Let's get familiar with some of these great nights in hockey history.

5. Pavol Demitra completes the feat against the Colorado Avalanche

Interestingly enough, Monday night wasn't the only time the Staples Center ice has been littered with hat night hats. On Nov. 19, 2005, Demitra scored the game-winning goal against the Avalanche with less than four minutes remaining in the game. More importantly? It completed his hat night hat trick.

4. Eric Staal closes out the Carolina Hurricanes final home game with a hat night hat trick (April 8, 2010 vs. Montreal)

The Hurricanes failed to qualify for the playoffs during the 2009-10 season, but Staal made sure the final home game of the year was memorable. Staal finished the game with five points, including an empty net goal with 75 seconds left in the contest. Here's a fan video of what ensued after the goal:

3. Sidney Crosby scores a hat night hat trick and a bag night hat trick

Crosby liked giveaways during the 2009-10 season. On two separate occasions, Crosby scored hat tricks on give away nights. The first came on Nov. 28, 2009 against the New York Rangers when he completed the hat night, hat trick. Later in the year, he completed a hat trick on bag night against the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 1, 2010. However, this list focuses on hat night, hat tricks, so the bag night feat remains an honorable mention:

2. Mike Ricci scores a hat trick on hat night to tie the game with three seconds left

Ricci's hat night hat trick might have been the most impressive given that the San Jose Sharks were trailing the Dallas Stars 4-3 in the closing seconds of the contest. With the goaltender pulled, Ricci won the offensive zone face-off and then made his way to the net to tip home his third goal of the game. Unfortunately, the Sharks lost the game in overtime.

1. Jonathan Toews records the greatest hat night hat trick in history

As we have seen, scoring a hat trick on hat night has happened on several occasions. How many times has a hat trick been scored on hard hat giveaway night? One time. By Jonathan Toews:

While it might be disputable that this is the greatest hat night hat trick in history, it will be extremely difficult to disagree that it is by far the most dangerous hat night hat trick in history.

* There have been other instances of hat tricks on hat give away nights, such as Brett Hull's in the mid-90s. However, not all of these instances have been captured for the internet age, so we don't have the video.
