Marc Staal is waiting for the swelling to go down around his eye before a proper diagnosis is made, according to his brother Eric Staal.

New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal is waiting for the swelling to go down around his right eye before a proper diagnosis can be made about the extent of his injury, according to his brother Eric Staal, as told to Dan Rosen of NHL.com.

The Rangers have yet to officially comment on the situation.

Marc was struck in the face with a deflected shot in Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Staal immediately fell to the ice, was visibly in pain and clearly bleeding from the face. Following the incident, .GIFs, pictures and video footage clearly displayed Staal being struck in the eye with the puck.

He was not wearing a visor during the play.

This latest incident is unfortunately another example of why debate has ensued about mandating NHL players to wear facial protection. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly stated that the league is in favor of making visors required by all players. However, the NHL Players' Association believes it is the player's right to choose whether he wears a visor.
