NHL Scores: Blue Jackets pull off a miracle, Blackhawks crush Red Wings

Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sport

The Columbus Blue Jackets are rising, and have moved into the final playoff spot in the West ... right behind the Detroit Red Wings.

The Anaheim Ducks may be third in the NHL in points, but on Sunday they fell in overtime to the surprising Columbus Blue Jackets, a team which continues to fight for a playoff spot thanks in large part to the stellar play of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

Elsewhere in the NHL on Sunday, the Detroit Red Wings were crushed like an Easter Peep under the savage boot of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Kings edged the Stars, and the Flyers won a thriller in overtime to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Bruins and Sabres also played a very boring game that nobody watched all the way until the end because Game of Thrones came on.

Read on for all the details.

Five Answers

Prior to last night's games, we presented five burning questions regarding the night's action. Here are your cool, soothing answers.

1. Can the Red Wings finally beat the Blackhawks?

Almost!

The Red Wings were thoroughly embarrassed on national television, losing 7-1 to their division rivals. The Blackhawks have now won their past six games against the Red Wings. Detroit missed a chance to jump up a spot or two in the Western Conference and instead stay in seventh, just two points ahead of ... the Columbus Blue Jackets???

2. What exactly are the Capitals and Flyers doing here?

The two teams played a very entertaining game, which went back and forth before ending in overtime with a 5-4 Flyers victory thanks to a game-winning goal from Ruslan Fedotenko. The Capitals blew a 4-2 lead in the third period, which has to sting given how important every single point is to the team right now.

3. How will Dallas start its odd California-only streak?

The Stars dropped the first game of their six-game California saga 3-2 to the Kings. The game wasn't as close as the final score, with the Kings outshot the Stars 40 to 15 in the contest.

4. Is there still any rivalry spark between the Sabres and Bruins?

There weren't any big fights or dirty hits, but the penalties in this game were ... odd. In the first period, Zdeno Chara cross-checked Steve Ott, and both players got a penalty on the play (Ott's was for diving). Then later in the period the same thing happened again, as Christian Ehrhoff took a holding penalty and Tyler Seguin got a diving call.

Nathan Horton took two minor penalties in the second period for the Bruins, and served the penalty for a too-many-men call, but the Sabres couldn't convert on any of their powerplays. The Bruins won 2-0.

5. Who will take the final two spots in the Frozen Four?

Quinnipiac trounced Union College and St. Cloud State beat the Miami (OH) Redhawks to fill out the final spots in a very surprising Frozen Four.

Impact Moment

What moment from last night's games will be making headlines in the coming days?

Maxime Talbot's lower-body injury sure looked serious, and might keep him out of the lineup for awhile.

Stat of the Night

Sergie Bobrovsky continues to impress for the Blue Jackets.
