The Vancouver Canucks have acquired forward Derek Roy from the Dallas Stars, according to a report by Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier on Tuesday, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reported that the Stars had failed to make progress on contract extensions with Roy, Jaromir Jagr and Erik Nystrom. All three will become unrestricted free agents this summer.
According to multiple reports, general manager Joe Nieuwendyk informed Jagr that he was going to be traded. Clearly, Nieuwendyk was not confident that either Jagr or Roy were going to be re-signed and believes it is in the best interest of the team to collect assets instead of losing the players for free.
Roy is currently playing in the final year of a six-year, $24 million contract that carries an annual average value of $4 million against the salary cap.
