Alexander Semin injury: Hurricanes forward out for remainder of season

USA TODAY Sports

Alexander Semin will miss the remainder of the season due to a concussion.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a concussion, according to head coach Kirk Mueller on Thursday morning.

Carolina has two games remaining and did not qualify for the playoffs.

Semin played against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night and scored the contest's opening goal. He recorded 23:10 of ice-time over 33 shifts. The 29-year-old forward registered 6:49 of ice-time in the third period. It remains unclear when the injury was sustained.

Semin was unable to participate in practice on Wednesday. Mueller stated that he was fine and explained his absence as a maintenance day. This marks the second time this season that Semin has been forced to miss a set of games, as he sat out a pair of games in April due to an undisclosed upper-body injury.

Originally acquired as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason, the controversial forward has established a stable standing in the Carolina organization. Labeled as a 'coach killer' during a free agency special on TSN last summer, Semin was openly accepted by the upper-management in Carolina, as well as by the team's players.

The Hurricanes were so pleased with Semin's performance that they extended his one-year contract at the end of March with a new five-year, $35 million deal. The first year of that contract will begin next season and will carry through until the completion of the 2017-18 season.

In 44 games in 2013, Semin registered 44 points (13 goals and 31 assists), as well as averaging 20:56 of ice-time (most amongst Hurricanes forwards), which included an average of 3:33 on the power play (tied for team lead).
