Let's face it. If you're not already a Red Wings fan, now is kind of a bad time for new recruits.
I mean, Detroit fits the underdog role for which people love to root, but unless you've got a hilariously bad grasp of the last two decades' worth of hockey and don't live around other people who do know, you're probably not going to get much outside of sideways glances and possibly punches in the groin for telling people that you're pulling for the Red Wings because they're underdogs.
What that means, though, is that if you've got a healthy grasp of schadenfreude and dislike literally any city that has a hockey team, then rooting for the Red Wings is much easier, because (if NBC Sports Network is to be believed), they're EVERYONE'S rival.
Aside from that, Detroit has one of the most-welcoming bandwagons in hockey. Picking any team for which to root is going to lead to criticism from people who don't like them, but there's a good number of fanbases that will eat their own with disdain for newcomers (because c'mon, newbies are kind of embarrassingly naive). Wings fans have been cannibalizing the old and jaded ones. We're very welcoming of people who don't say dumb defeatist crap.
Finally, c'mon. Best uniforms/logo in hockey, hands-down.
