NHL trade deadline: Steve Mason acquired by Flyers

Doug Pensinger

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired goaltender Steve Mason from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired goaltender Steve Mason from the Columbus Blue Jackets, according to multiple reports on Wednesday afternoon.

In exchange for Mason, Columbus will receive goaltender Michael Leighton and a third-round draft pick.

Mason has appeared in 13 games this season and has registered a 3-6-1 record along with a .899 save percentage and a 2.95 goals against average. The 24-year-old goaltender entered this season in a competition with Sergei Bobrovsky to earn the starter's role for the Blue Jackets. Bobrovsky ultimately won that competition and has gone onto to propel himself into Vezina Trophy consideration.

Of course, that makes this trade that much more interesting considering that Columbus acquired Bobrovsky last summer from Philadelphia. The Flyers were clearly looking for a goaltender as they also inquired about Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators goaltender Ben Bishop.

Bishop was ultimately traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier on Wednesday.

Philadelphia has started Ilya Bryzgalov in 33 of 35 games this season. Some have speculated that they have started Bryzgalov so frequently because of how poor their back-up options were. Others have already started to wonder whether Bryzgalov will be extended an amnesty buyout this summer.
