Joffrey Lupul injury: Toronto winger dazed by hard hit

Claus Andersen

Lupul could barely skate off the ice after taking a hit from a pair of Flyers.

Early in the first period of Thursday's game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto's Joffrey Lupul took a hard hit that left him dazed and sent him to the dressing room.

The hit to Lupul was delivered by the combined force of Adam Hall and Jay Rosehill, and the way Lupul reacted after the hit certainly raises the fear of a possible concussion. He was visibly dizzy as he skated towards the bench, holding on to the boards for support, and it took him several tries to successfully make it through the bench door.

After the hit, the game quickly took a nasty turn, with shouting and numerous penalties handed out to both sides. Eventually Toronto enforcer Colton Orr would seek out Rosehill, who previously played for the Maple Leafs, for a fight. Orr took an extra two-minute penalty on the play for roughing, though Rosehill got the better of the fight.

Lupul has been a major part of Toronto's offense since returning to the team from injury in mid-March. He has eight goals and five assists so far this season, and all of them have come in his past six games.

UPDATE: The Maple Leafs have said that Lupul has an upper-body injury and will not return to the game.
