USA TODAY Sports

Alexei Emelin will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a torn ligament in his left knee.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin will miss the remainder of the 2013 season due to a torn ligament in his left knee, according to the team on Monday afternoon.

Emelin sustained the injury in Saturday night's game against the Boston Bruins while attempting to execute a hit on Bruins forward Milan Lucic. As Lucic carried the puck through the neutral zone, Emelin attempted to land the hit but ended up receiving the worst of the blow.

Emelin tumbled to the ice and was unable to get up. He required assistance to get off the ice and was unable to return to the game.

In 38 games this season, the 26-year-old has accumulated three goals and nine assists for 12 points. Emelin was averaging 19:40 of ice-time per game , which included an average of 2:11 on the penalty kill. His ice-time total ranks fifth amongst Montreal defensemen, while his penalty kill total rank fourth.
