Penguins vs. Senators Game 3 update: Pittsburgh and Ottawa scoreless after 1st

Paul Bereswill

Both goalies were perfect in the opening period.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had a 2-0 lead in their series with the Ottawa Senators heading into Game 3 and were looking to take a 3-0 stranglehold, while the Senators were hoping that a return to their home arena would be enough to turn the series around. After the opening 20 minutes, neither team has been able to take the lead in the contest.

Both teams had a single unsuccessful power play in the opening period, and the shots were 12-8 in favor of the Penguins. Pittsburgh looked to have the edge in pressure throughout most of the first, but Ottawa had some great chances on their power play.

Without any goals, the highlight of the first period came when Sergei Gonchar caught James Neal with a big hit:

Evgeni Malkin drew a penalty with just two seconds remaining in the period, and the Penguins will start the second on the power play.
