NHL playoffs 2013: Thursday schedule packed with four games

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

After a thrilling opening night, the second set of NHL playoff games left plenty to be desired. On Thursday night, four games line the schedule with the final two series making their debut.

Over the course of the regular season, it was often stated the Western Conference was more competitive than its Eastern Conference counterpart.

Tuesday night's slate of playoff games did nothing to dissuade that line of thinking.

Following an amazing opening night, the second installment of the 2013 playoffs included two blowouts, both of which featured Eastern-based opponents. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins managed to display why many considered them favorites to win the East, while the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs looked out of sorts in their first appearancez after extended absence from the second season.

Out West, the San Jose Sharks managed to register the first road victory of this playoff season when they bested the No. 3 seeded Vancouver Canucks. Powered by three unanswered goals, defenseman Dan Boyle recorded the game-winning goal with 10 minutes remaining in the final period.

On Thursday night, the final two Eastern Conference series will get their start, while the Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues attempt to live up to the excitement of Game 1. The Detroit Red Wings and Anaheim Ducks will also return to action as the Red Wings look to knot the series at one game apiece.
