Capitals vs. Rangers Game 3 update: Brian Boyle answers Caps' opening goal

Bruce Bennett

Boyle's goal is why this game is tied at 1-1 after one period.

The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals deserve to be tied after playing a rather evenly-matched first period in New York.

Nicklas Backstrom got the Caps on the board early with a nice deflection off a John Carlson shot just 4:08 into the game. The officials reviewed it, but it looked like he got his stick under the crossbar before he made contact with the puck.

Staring at an early 1-0 deficit in a crucial Game 3 is not what the Rangers had hoped for, but Brian Boyle evened things up with a power play goal at the 12:50 mark. Mike Green made a strange attempt at defending Boyle's rush to the net and the large Rangers forward slipped it by Braden Holtby.

The Capitals might want to stay out of the penalty box if they want to win this game. They've already been penalized three times, all for unnecessary reasons -- roughing, high-sticking and too many men on the ice.
