Ducks vs. Red Wings Game 5 update: Anaheim kills major penalty, ties game

USA TODAY Sports

The Ducks survived a five-minute major penalty to Daniel Winnik before Ryan Getzlaf tied the game at the end of the second period.

The Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings were tied 2-2 after two periods of Game 5. Their series has been a back-and-forth exchange of wins, so it's only fitting that Game 5 be a back-and-forth exchange of goals with the winner yet to be scored.

After swapping goals in the first period, the Wings and Ducks did it again in the second period in dramatic fashion. First, the Wings opened a 2-1 lead on MIkael Samuelsson's goal, made possible thanks to a fat rebound by Jonas Hiller:

The Wings had a great opportunity to build a bigger lead when they received a five-minute power play thanks to a Daniel Winnik major boarding penalty. Winnik hit Daniel Cleary from behind and hard into the boards, appearing to cause an arm injury that kept Cleary off the ice for the rest of the period

However, the Wings failed on their power play and, worse, defenseman Brendan Smith took a holding penalty four minutes into it.

Once Winnik got out of the box, the Ducks went to work on their own power play, where captain Ryan Getzlaf tied it with a wrist shot from the top of the slot.

With both the series and Game 5 tied at 2-2, the third period promised to be a good one.
