Carey Price injury: Canadiens goalie to miss remainder of Eastern Conference Quarterfinal

USA TODAY Sports

As if things couldn't get any worse for the Montreal Canadiens, the team announced Carey Price will miss the remainder of the first round.

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will miss the remainder of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal due to a lower-body injury, the team announced on Thursday morning.

Price sustained the undisclosed injury during the third period of Game 4. While he was able to finish regulation, Price did not return for overtime. With backup goaltender Peter Budaj in the crease, the Ottawa Senators won the contest on a shot that Budaj admitted was a weak attempt.

It remains unclear whether Price would be able to return if the Canadiens advance beyond the first-round. However, the team enters Game 5 on Thursday night trailing the Senators 3-1 in the series.

Without Price, it seems like a daunting task to win three consecutive games. Combine that with the plethora of injuries the Canadiens roster has experienced over the four games series and the prospects of such an occurrence become even more bleak.

In addition to Price, Montreal will be without captain Brian Gionta, Brandon Prust, Ryan White and presumably Lars Eller.

Coming off a blowout loss in Game 3, Montreal surrendered a two-goal third period lead in Game 4 before Kyle Turris scored the game-winner in overtime. While momentum is difficult argument to make, it certainly appears as though things have not been going the Canadiens way.

Montreal will attempt to stave off elimination on Thursday night in Game 5.
